[JYO] Airplane Crashes in Leesburg, Pilot Killed

Updated: Thursday, Mar. 20, 2003 - 11:59 PM EST. (LEESBURG) -- Federal
officials are investigating the cause of a plane crash in Leesburg that
killed the pilot and forced the evacuation of 25 people Thursday night.

Loudoun County firefighters are also working to contain more than 30 gallons
of fuel that spilled from the 2002 Mooney, when it crashed into the backyard
of a home on Whip Drive.

The crash happened at about 8 p.m. in a new subdivision, about a half mile
from the end of the runway at Leesburg Airpark. The pilot was apparently the
only person aboard the 2002 Mooney when it went down.

The plane is registered to a company in another state.

Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the crash -- the third in
Leesburg in the last eight months, all close to the airport.
