AOPA urges House/Senate conferees to kill Kohl amendment
11/5/01 7:36:28 PM ET — <A
HREF="http://www.aopa.org/whatsnew/newsitems/2001/011105letter.html">In a
letter</A> sent to the Senate Commerce Committee,
the Chairs and Ranking members of the House Transportation and Infrastructure
Committee and the Aviation subcomittee, AOPA President Phil Boyer urged that
Amendment No. 1873 be deleted from the Aviation Security Bill soon to be in
conference. AOPA has consistently opposed this amendment, which Senator Kohl
(D-WI) attached to the Senate version of the Aviation Security Act. It would
force the FAA implement a security program for aircraft weighing 12,500
pounds or less. Boyer pointed out how this would continue to compound the
economic damage already inflicted on GA airports, aircraft owners, and FBOs.
As soon as all conferees are named, they will be served with the same
message. The House version of the Bill, passed last week, does not contain
this onerous provision.
