If you have not responded, please do!

I bet lots of you folks got this email from AOPA, but if
you didn't, read it and send your comments to the NRPM on
the ADIZ. Less than 2500 pilots responded from VA and MD
on this issue, less than 10% of those pilots who could.
Take 10 minutes and send in your comments!!!

Letter from Phil Boyer
Fellow Washington, D.C.-Area Pilots:

All of us who fly in this area know what severe problems
the Washington, D.C., Air Defense Identification Zone
(ADIZ) has created for aviation in our area. Hastily
conceived over a weekend in February 2003, and explained
as a temporary restriction, it has never gone away. And
the recent FAA Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) will
make permanent all of these temporary flight restrictions.

Your Association has been working hard to build opposition
to this action. And we need your help.

I want to thank each of you who has already submitted
comments: More than 19,000 pilots from across the country
have participated in this unprecedented response. While no
previous FAA proposal has generated that many individual
comments from pilots, it is disappointing to note that, of
the total comments received, only 10 percent of D.C.-area
pilots have responded. The current Virginia count is at
1,188, and Maryland at 1,125 comments filed. In sharp
contrast, pilots in Florida have filed 2,772 comments,
followed by California with 2,385.

For those of you who haven't yet commented, please do so.
Acting on pressure from AOPA, the FAA has extended the
opportunity for pilots to comment against the FAA's ADIZ
proposal. The comment period now ends on February 6, 2006.

Your fellow pilots need your support and comments, and it
is important that the FAA and security officials hear
about your personal experiences with the ADIZ.
Specifically, the FAA is asking for additional information
on the effects of the restrictions on aircraft owners that
were forced to relocate outside the ADIZ and the loss of
income for those operators.

They need to know:
1. What amount of time and expense has been incurred as a
result of having to
circumnavigate the ADIZ area.
2. If you have decreased or stopped flying because of the
ADIZ restrictions.
3. If your flight plans have been lost; if you've had
difficulty getting a clearance;
or if you've received confused or garbled messages from
controllers.
4. If you are avoiding the area because of the ADIZ.

The government needs to hear from you, a pilot with
operational experience flying in and around the ADIZ.

Responding to requests from AOPA and numerous members of
Congress, the FAA is also conducting two public meetings
on the proposal. These meetings are scheduled for January
12 and 18, 2006. As President of your Association?and a
local pilot who has been drastically impacted by the
ADIZ?I will be speaking out against the plan to make the
ADIZ permanent at the FAA's afternoon meeting on January
18. I hope that you also plan to attend one of these
critical meetings.

So I'm appealing to you, as a D.C.-area pilot, for help in
defeating the ADIZ. Please tell the government, loud and
clear, that the ADIZ does not work.

For step-by-step assistance in sending your message to the
FAA, please go to www.aopa.org/adizalert/. And don't
forget to send me a copy of your comments at
adiz@xxxxxxxxx

And if you want to participate in one of the public
meetings slated for January 12 and 18, click here for
details on times and location.

Thanks again for your membership and for supporting our
fight against the ADIZ.
