AOPA HAS SMALL VICTORY IN BIG ADIZ
After a year's worth of efforts by AOPA and area pilots to improve operations
within the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Air Defense Identification Zone
(ADIZ), life will get slightly better for pilots flying out of two airports.
The FAA is expected to issue a notam soon that moves the line for the
procedure area for Kentmorr Airpark and Bay Bridge Airport several miles south
to the end of Kent Island. The original procedure didn't provide enough room
for Kentmorr pilots to fly a left pattern, which, in some cases, caused
pattern overlap for the two airports. Under the previous notam, Kentmorr
pilots who wanted to land and buy fuel at Bay Bridge had to leave the ADIZ and
reenter with a new transponder code. The new notam fixes that, allowing pilots
to fly to Bay Bridge without leaving the ADIZ area. "While AOPA appreciates
this change, it certainly doesn't do much for most of the pilots based at the
more than 19 airports located under the ADIZ," said AOPA President Phil Boyer.
"The fact that this minor change took a full year to implement underscores
just how dysfunctional the ADIZ has become and serves to reinforce AOPA's view
that the ADIZ is hurting pilots."
