[JYO] AOPA Fly-In offers plenty for everyone, come rain or shine

June 5 — No matter the weather, the 13th annual AOPA Fly-In and Open House at
AOPA headquarters in Frederick, Md., is the place to be this weekend. With
more than two dozen aircraft on display, over 100 vendors, and more than a
dozen
seminars during the day, there is something for everyone, from pilots with a
wallet full of ratings to someone who just thinks planes are cool.
Even if the weather is below VFR, there's plenty of parking for anyone
driving in, with free shuttle service between the outlying parking areas and
the
airport. And while there's less aircraft parking available than last year due
to
airport construction and a sodden infield, there's still room for more than
400 aircraft.
For nostalgia buffs, the AOPA Centennial of Flight
Sweepstakes aircraft, a
1940 Waco UPF-7 biplane will headline the static display area. Also on display
will be two Boeing PT-17 Stearman aircraft. Wacos and Stearmans were two of the
most common flight training aircraft for America's World War II pilots.
Among the other aircraft on display will be the recently certified Luscombe
Model 11E, a LanShe (formerly Micco) 26, and a Lancair Columbia. Overall, the
static display aircraft will run the gamut from two-seat trainers to high-end
aircraft like the Beech King Air and Pilatus PC-12.
Seminars will range from serious safety topics like aeronautical decision
making and spatial disorientation, to the humor of Rod Machado's "Hangar Flying
2003."
And under the "big top," more than 100 vendors will offer everything from
aviation souvenirs to the latest avionics.
