[JYO] 9/18/01 situation update from AOPA as of 5:22PM

Meeting to discuss VFR operations rescheduled for 5 p.m. Update: 9/18/2001
5:22:17 PM— A morning meeting that was supposed to discuss VFR operations
was rescheduled to 5 p.m. this afternoon. VFR operations are still prohibited
everywhere except Alaska (<A HREF="http://www.aopa.org/page_2.html#ifr";>see
story</A>). National security officials have not
indicated when they might make a decision on restoring some VFR operations.

Earlier this afternoon, Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta held a
press conference to talk about an economic aid package for the airlines.
Secretary Mineta said that he had talked to "all aspects of the aviation
industry," including general aviation. He said a plan would be in place "next
week." It's important to note that the Secretary was talking about the plan
for the airlines, not anything specific to VFR flight privileges.

National security officials to meet again
VFR flight still not allowed — VFR flight is still
prohibited everywhere in the U.S. except Alaska. Another meeting of national
security officials is scheduled for later this morning. AOPA is providing FAA
with additional information about general aviation and the impact of the VFR
ban, which FAA will present to the national security officials. AOPA will
update this Web site as soon as we learn the results of the meeting.

To recap, general aviation VFR flight is not permitted except in Alaska. IFR
is permitted with restrictions (<A
HREF="http://www.aopa.org/page_2.html#ifr";>see story</A>). Part 137
agricultural operations
are permitted, except in Class B airspace.
