The only way (that I know of) to umount a device is to be absolutely sure

Well, turns out that Konqueror was keeping itself preloaded with a
pointer to the last open directory. Preloading is a good thing, I guess,
but it was causing me problems. I was able to configure Konqueror not to
do a preload and my problem was solved. Guess I should contact the
developers about this one.
