I decided to download and test FC2. Was going to try the upgrade on my
test machine, but messed it up by bypassing the media test and going
right to the install. You guessed it...the install bombed part way
through. Turns out that I had a bad download on the first ISO. The
md5sum checked out, but I burned 3 cd's before downloading a new image
from a different source. Then I did a fresh install. Painless install
after that.
I have run into a couple of problems so far. The service config tool
doesn't want to load from the menu. It brings up the prompt for the root
password, but it won't load....have to go to the commandline to run it.
Once up, the checkboxes for the services to start at boot time are
mostly missing, so you can't make any changes. Also, it wouldn't let me
change the runlevel to edit. I'm not going to report anything right now.
I am going to put a spare harddrive on the raid controller of my main
system and install FC2 there so I can test and compare it to my FC1
installation.
I thought the KDE was going to be 3.2. It is actually just under 3.2.
Also, I thought that XFCE4 was going to be part of the default install.
I did a custom workstation install, but didn't see XFCE4 as an option.
Maybe if I did a full install. XFCE4 would be great on this test machine
as it is only PPro 200 with 160 mb of ram.
K3b - I downloaded and installed K3b, the CD/DVD burner for KDE. This is
one slick app! I had a problem burning FC2 iso at first, so I did the
job with Xcdroast. Then I went back to K3b and did a test burn. Worked
fine this time. For iso's, if you have the MD5SUM file with the iso, it
will automatically check the md5sum for you. Very nice touch. Burning a
datacd is a drag 'n drop show. I don't have a DVD burner, so I don't
know how it works. I wasted one cd-r at first. Clicked the "New Data CD
Project" icon, dragged the first ISO to the project and hit the burn
button. It burned the cd all right, but it was just a data cd with the
ISO! Had thought that it would see that it is an ISO and burn the image.
I guess I should submit this as a wishlist item. The default screen
didn't have the button for "Burn CD Image", though it is available from
the Tools > CD pulldown. Right click in the pane with the other buttons,
and you can add buttons for all the commands. For a program a version
00.11.4, it is sure feature rich and polished!
If anyone wants to try FC2, let me know.
One other thing, if you have any old cd's laying around, I will take
them off your hands. My wife and mother-in-law have a couple of craft
projects that use cd's....I have a start with the coasters that I burned
with FC2!
Later.
