[jsfg_cinti] Re: request for advice or ideas

I think your idea of making yourself "stand out from the crowd" is right =
on because employers get an overwhelming number of responses to =
postings, especially if the postings are on the Internet. Why do you =
say "I believe I am very qualified?" Either you are or you are not. If =
you are not, then what do you need to become qualified? If you are =
qualified then you need to investigate the steps to become more =
qualified and thereby give yourself an advantage over the average =
applicant. =20

My advice for your current situation is twofold. First, take a good =
look at your resume and have someone knowledgeable, and in the field if =
possible, look at it to see if it represents you well and if you are =
using the key words and catch phrases that are applicable to the =
industry. Second, with any posting I highly discourage calling the =
organization because there is just no way they can field calls from the =
numerous applicant. However, because of the industry you are trying to =
get into I would suggest making a visit to a few of the organizations =
(museums, fund raisers for charities, Party at the Point -media, ... ) =
to see if you stumble upon, and make friends with, anyone who works =
there who may be able to give you some inside knowledge. There is =
nothing like personal contact to give you the competitive edge.

Subject: [jsfg_cinti] request for advice or ideas

Hi Everyone,
I'm new to JSFG, and I'm wondering if anyone can give me advice =
regarding a disturbing pattern in my job search.=20
Here's the deal: I'm primarily interested in doing media/community =
relations for a nonprofit, and I believe I am very qualified to do so. I =
have submitted letters of interest along with resumes to various =
hospitals, museums and charities. I was advised to take the initiative =
in hopes I could interview for positions before they get posted.
However, a pattern is emerging that I don't understand. Just last week I =
submitted such a letter and resume to the VP of Marketing for the Museum =
Center. She was on vacation, so I followed up with a phone call =
Wednesday (got voice mail), and today I learn the museum is advertising =
a posting for a PR person (exactly the position I'm seeking). Again, I =
followed up with a phone call (again got vm).=20
What's disturbing to me is that this is the third time this has happened =
in recent weeks. I express an interest, then an appropriate job gets =
posted, the organization gets swamped with hundreds of resumes, and I =
become just another applicant.
Other than becoming a "stalker" via the phone (which apparently isn't =
being answered anyway), I'm just not sure how to get myself to stand out =
from the crowd.
If you've got any advice or ideas, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Thanks in advance,
Myra Calder
