Hi Everyone,
I'm new to JSFG, and I'm wondering if anyone can give me advice regarding a
disturbing pattern in my job search.
Here's the deal: I'm primarily interested in doing media/community relations
for a nonprofit, and I believe I am very qualified to do so. I have submitted
letters of interest along with resumes to various hospitals, museums and
charities. I was advised to take the initiative in hopes I could interview for
positions before they get posted.
However, a pattern is emerging that I don't understand. Just last week I
submitted such a letter and resume to the VP of Marketing for the Museum
Center. She was on vacation, so I followed up with a phone call Wednesday (got
voice mail), and today I learn the museum is advertising a posting for a PR
person (exactly the position I'm seeking). Again, I followed up with a phone
call (again got vm).
What's disturbing to me is that this is the third time this has happened in
recent weeks. I express an interest, then an appropriate job gets posted, the
organization gets swamped with hundreds of resumes, and I become just another
applicant.
Other than becoming a "stalker" via the phone (which apparently isn't being
answered anyway), I'm just not sure how to get myself to stand out from the
crowd.
If you've got any advice or ideas, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Thanks in advance,
Myra Calder
