DUTIES:
Responsible for the initiation, design, conduct and publication of studies
which examine the relationship between exposure to bloodborne infections in the
workplace and the development of disease, and studies that examine the risks
associated with workers who become or who are infected. Provides consultation
on medical aspects of the design and interpretation of occupational health
studies, including the selection of tests to be employed and the potential
risks to study participants of the testing procedures. Initiates, designs and
directs the development of studies which currently include: (1) Investigating
the relationship between workplace exposures to bloodborne pathogens and the
development of disease; (2) Studies that examine the risks associated with
workers who become or who are infected; and (3) Investigate the relationship of
exposures to health outcomes. Duties include but are not limited to: 1) the
development of research protocols, 2) the identification of study populations
suitable for study, 3) negotiation with industry and labor groups concerning
the study, 4) overseeing the collection of data for the study, 5) the conduct
of appropriate statistical analyses for interpreting the study findings, and 6)
producing reports for publication in scientific peer reviewed journals and for
internal technical reports. Incumbent may also be responsible for providing
expert consultation to extramural researchers on the conduct of NIOSH-funded
studies.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Candidates must have a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree from a
school in the U.S. or Canadian medical school approved by a recognized
accrediting body in the year of the applicant's graduation. A Doctor of
Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school that provided
education and medical knowledge substantially equivalent to accredited schools
in the U.S. may be demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational
Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) or a fifth pathway certificate
for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and
graduate education in a foreign country. At the GS-13, candidates must have
two (2) years of medical research experience, in addition to meeting the
requirements for GS-12, and which demonstrated the ability to do independent
major medical research. Licensure to practice medicine in a State, District
of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the Unitied
States is required.
Specialized Experience is that which is directly related to the position and
which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and
abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position, such as a
knowledge of the medical aspects of occupational health principles and
practices, and the ability to manage, direct, evaluate, and conduct studies of
a variety of work places to assess the relationship between exposure to
bloodborne infections in the workplace and the development of disease, and to
examine the risks associated with workers who become or who are infected.
SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE:
At the GS-13 level, an earned doctorate, e.g., Ph.d. or Sc.D. ( in addition to
the Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree) from an accredited
college or university in a field of science directly related to medicine and
closely allied to the position to be filled or, in addition, to meeting the
requirements for GS-12, two (2) years of graduate training may be fully
qualifying.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES (KSAs):
KSAs are the specific characteristics that applicants should possess in order
to perform the major duties of the position. Applications should address the
