This position is a TERM appointment NTE 2 years, may be extended 2 additional

DUTIES: 
Performs a wide variety of industrial hygiene functions necessary for 
characterizing workers exposure to hazardous agents.   Plans, coordinates, and 
conducts assigned surveys related to recognition, evaluation, and formulation 
of controls for occupational health hazards.  Responds to emergency crisis 
situations where hazards to life may be imminent which requires performance 
under severe time constraints and pressures.  For some of the materials 
evaluated, there is little or no information available on the nature and extent 
of the hazard is assigned as project officer on health hazard evaluations and 
technical assistance projects.  The employee is responsible for the overall 
investigation and for designing and executing its environmental component.  
Coordinates the industrial hygiene, medical, and epidemiological components of 
the study and develops liaison with other government agencies, corporate level 
management, and international labor union representatives, health, safety, and 
legal professionals.  Conducts walk-through surveys of facilities to determine 
types of materials used, controls in use and work practices.  Determines type 
and number of environmental samples or measurements to be collected.  Conducts 
and/or directs sampling.
 
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: 
Candidates for Industrial Hygienist must have successfully completed a full 
4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a 
bachelor's degree with major study in industrial hygiene; or a branch of 
engineering, physical science or life science, which includes 12 semester hours 
in chemistry (including organic chemistry), and 18 additional semester hours of 
courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, 
environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, 
epidemiology or industrial hygiene.  Courses in the history or teaching of 
chemistry are not acceptable.  OR  A combination of education and experience 
which includes at least 12 semester hours of course work in chemistry including 
organic chemistry, and 18 additional hours as specified above, plus appropriate 
experience or additional education.   In addition, candidates must have 1 year 
of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade.

Combining education and experience:   Equivalent combinations of successfully 
completed post- baccalaureate education and experience may be used to meet 
total experience requirements.  The applicant's total qualifying experience is 
determined as a percentage of the experience required; then the applicant's 
education is determined as a percentage of the education required; then the two 
percentages are added together.  The total percentage must equal at least 100 
percent to qualify.


Specialized Experience is that which is directly related to the position and 
which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and 
abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position, such as 
experience conducting a variety of industrial hygiene studies related to 
occupational safety and health.
 
SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: 
Successful completion of 3 full years of graduate level education or a Ph.D. or 
equivalent graduate degree may be considered fully qualifying for the GS-11.

The purpose of this position is to develop, modify, and/or evaluate sampling

as provide analysis of samples collected by NIOSH laboratory and field 
researchers.  Incumbent assists in the development and modification of sample 
preparation and analytical methods; conducts tests and analyzes resulting data; 
assists in the interpretation of results obtained from the use of standard 
instruments, procedures, or techniques; provides recommendations for the 
solution of identified and defined problems/issues.  


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: 
Applicants must meet the basic qualification requirements outlined in OPM 
Qualification Standards Handbook.  Candidates must have successfully completed 
one of the following:  (A) A full 4 year course in an accredited college or 
university leading to a bachelor's degree in one of the physical or life 
sciences, or engineering, which includes 30 semester hours in chemistry, 
supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral
