[jsfg_cinti] Re: career management

Here's my 2 cents:

There are a lot of career counselers and trainers - some good, some
average, some poor. There's also a very wide range of costs - from
free, to a few hundred dollars, to $10K. I think you can get
training/counseling at a much more reasonable price. Several of the
JSFG speakers and trainers are career counselers, and that gives you a
chance to "check out" their style. There are quite a few career
counselers who charge by the hour which I think is a lot less risk then
signing up for a big lump sum.

Greg and others, I can echo the comment made by Robin. I can also add
to it that a year ago I spoke to Bernard Haldane and the package they
put together for me was over $10K. Another one of their approached is
that they wanted to bring my wife to a meeting with them. I'm sure that
the plan is to play on the fear and concern of a non-working spouse who
frankly doesn't completely understand what I do for a living. Then use
that as a further leverage point to shake loose the money.

I would not recommend this approach and find their tactics very
discomforting. Especially, when you find yourself income challenged to
start with.

Just my thoughts/good luck,

Keith

Greg and others,

Yes, unfortunately I do have some past experience with this company and
a few others like them. While I do not argue thay can provide job search
and placememt assistance, it will cost yoou a great deal of money with
no guarantee of success which you will not get. Keep in mind, these type
of firms are NOT headhunters hired by an employer to locate candidates.
In 1995, (in Dayton) they wanted $3500.00 up front and I was expected to
do my own lead searching with one of their reps looking over my shoulder
in their offices. Also, they would help prep you for an interview and
teach you how to negotiate for salary and benefits after you located the
position and made it to the interview stage. Part of the sales pitch was
they would help you negotiate pay above what you were originally willing
to accept and the difference would cover your cost for their services.
When I asked to view past customer satisfaction evidence, I was given a
beat up old black notebook with badly and sloppily written letters from
persons I could not identify to check with. The argument was to protect
client confidentiality.

Sorry to seem so negative, but the reality is these firms cannot do more
for you than you can do for yourself in addition to taking advantage of
a variety of no cost resources out there, one of which is JSFG.

To all JSFG members,
Does anyone know about or have experience with Bernard Haldane
Associates. They assist people in career management.

Thank you for any response.

Greg
