[jsfg_cinti] Uplifting stuff

Here are some great comments about a successful job search:
"Lets address conventional wisdom and all the important statistics that
may
tell us how to land the next position. In many ways I proved them
incorrect
and I will offer the following examples:

-Old age is a serious deterrent to getting a new position. This is no
longer
true!! Businesses learned their lesson during the great internet gold rush
and are not interested in hiring young MBAs who haven't yet obtained the
wisdom that only comes from many years of experience.

-Your next job will come from networking efforts. This is true but
remember
my network for the most part ...helped me with the process. I found the
jobs
by following the process and addressing all avenues of opportunity.

-Recruiters only place about 12% to 15% of the executive positions today.
Depending on what you are looking for this is clearly not the case. A
National statistic from the Red Book claims over 60%. I believe this to be
the case. Most corporations desire the security of filling the top
positions
with a recruiter and want to know that they are hiring the best. The key
is
to be in front of the recruiters and to be known as a valuable asset. Your
  networking efforts should help here.

-The internet represents only a small portion of the top jobs available.
This is not true. Everyone including the recruiters use the internet to
find
multiple candidates. The researchers almost always use the internet. This
was the third position I obtained through the internet! They were all GM
or
president jobs and went through a recruiter.

-Mailings don't work. Not true. Timing is important but snail mail is more
effective than e-mails. The recruiters get too much in the form of e-mails
and just can't handle all the traffic. Many are going to Executive
Registry
because of the quality of responses and Execu-Net is just too much.

-Mass E-Mailing are not effective. This is true for the most part.
Executive Agent allows you to do a personalized mailing with your own
subject
line and introduction letter. The recruiters pay more attention to this
and
also know that it originates from Kennedy.

-The economy is poor and nobody is hiring. This wasn't true in May and is
less true today. Most companies are coming out of their shell and are
looking to upgrade and fill open positions.

-Summer months are the worse time to find a job. In the three summer
months
  I found four offers.

-Changing jobs is a deterrent and shows instability. Not true. In fact the
opposite is true. Companies are looking for individuals with
multiple-company experience. I have had 8 employers in 32 years and this
was
attractive to all four companies that I talked with. In fact I shortened
my
resume by only mentioning my earlier employment and one recruiter insisted
that I rewrite my resume to include this experience.

-It takes 2 months to get the offer after the first recruiter contact. Not
true. All four positions were for the key executive and the position was
open and the companies were anxious to fill it immediately. I accepted the
offer two weeks after the first interview. It took the recruiter only 6
  weeks to fill this position.

-It is important to be early in the game. Not true. I was the fourth
candidate. After experience and other background it is all about
chemistry.
It is important to answer the advertisement in a internet listing in the
first two weeks after it hits the site.

-The single most important tool that you must apply is a one liner that
describes your success at your last position! This got me inside at over a
dozen opportunities. Mine was the success I had at growing the revenues at
my last company and successfully selling the company.

I hope this helps in your current or future efforts to land the next great
opportunity. I will close in adding that I set a goal to be employed by
the
end of the summer and would not listen to anybody that stated that this
was
impossible. I really didn't care about conventional wisdom or statistics
when I got up each morning and started my activities. If you work each day
towards any goal such as this you will reach it in spite of the fact that
it
  was impossible.
