250 rally for libraries
 June 24, 2009

MANY JSFGer's heavily rely on the library system and its training for
job searching and the ability to access the Internet for applications.

By about June 30th the governor's office is proposing to cut the budget
another 30%,

.. even though it was already cut significintly and the library has been
frugal over the past yrs. In not filling 100 positions and cutting back
by about 25% on its own. .

They say that in Hamilton county alone this will possibly force the
closing of HALF (50%)

of the branches putting even more people out
of work.

THEY ARE RECOMMENDING THAT CITIZENS CONTACT YOUR STATE LEGISLATORS AND
SHARE YOUR VIEWS ON THIS PROMPTLY

"These cuts would be devastating to libraries," Kim Fender, executive
director of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County told
the crowd. "This comes at a time when our libraries are being used more
than ever."

The budget reduction would cause the local library system serving
Cincinnati and Hamilton County to close as many as 20 of its 40 branch
libraries.

As part of the event, two helicopters from a pilots academy at Hook
Municipal Airport in Middletown landed in a marked-off area in the
parking lot of the strip mall where the Loveland Branch Library is
located.
The pilots and a flight instructor told the children in the crowd how
being able to read well helped them learn how to fly helicopters safely.
Before news of the state budget crisis broke this week, the library had
scheduled the helicopter landings as a way to attract children to the
library during the summer.
But library officials decided to use the event to encourage people to
protest the proposed cuts in library funding.
Many adults and children at the rally carried signs saying "Save Our
Libraries" and "We Love Our Libraries."
Deb Amend drove her five children all the way from their Colerain
Township home to join in the rally in Loveland.
"This is incredibly important," she said. "My children would not read
nearly as well as they do if it wasn't for the library."
