Reword your résumé to be job specific
By Marshall Loeb, CBS.MarketWatch.com
NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Better word choice on your résumé can help you get
more interviews when you're searching for a new job.
No matter the job, every employer is looking for candidates with a
specific set of skills and experiences, which are most often described
in the job listing. For example, a listing for a management position
might include the words "manage," "leadership," "motivate" or "team." A
listing for a writing position might include the words "creative" or
"clarity," while a listing for a Web developer might use names of
specific computer programs and systems.
Using those same keywords in your résumé can help keep yours among the
applications being considered. If it's a person doing the initial résumé
scan, your keywords can ensure your résumé gets a second look. If the
employer uses a computer program to scan and prioritize résumés,
keywords can push your résumé to the top of the pile.
To customize your résumé for a particular job, first examine the job
listing for key words and phrases. Then insert those words where
applicable on your résumé. But don't overdo it -- and don't try to pad
your résumé with experience you don't have.
If you're making a major career switch, or lack some of the employer's
preferred experience, insert a statement of your career objective at the
top of your résumé. Usually, this statement is a brief description of
your primary career goal. Include those keywords here and tell the
employer how you hope to use your experience and skills to excel in this
new career path.
