[jsfg_cinti] Re: Recruiters' questions

Hi all,

Typically, it is not a good thing to apply multiple times to the same
company, even for multiple jobs within that company. It can make you look
unorganized (applying multiple times), as well as desperate (applying for
multiple jobs - "I'll take anything, just hire me.").

Recruiters only get paid when you get hired. They typically don't want to
waste their time doing re-work.

One important thing to remember is that there are recruiters who are working
for the company and therefore have the company's best interest in mind
(they've been retained to find someone to fill specific skill sets or job
requirements), and there are recruiters who are working for you and have
your best interest in mind (they try to match you to jobs that you'll fit).
Neither is better or worse than the other, it's just a different way of
approaching the same problem (finding good people, and getting them hired).

If a recruiter is using your job search for their leads, something might not
be totally up-front. They don't have their pipe full and they're trying to
build their own book of business. That person probably is not a good person
to help you find your new career because he/she probably doesn't have the
contacts to many companies to present you to.

I'm sure that the problem was not with the agency (Robert Half), but rather
with the specific recruiter.

I hope this helps some. Good luck in your search.

Subject: [jsfg_cinti] Recruiters' questions

Hello and a good day to all! Hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving Holiday!

Here's a question and I hope it's appropriate here: I have met and talked
with recruiters and applied for jobs that they were/are trying to fill as
most all of us have done. And I seem to have a problem with some of their
questions/requirements, one of which goes something like this: "Please tell
me where you have applied recently or interviewed and for what job and keep
me informed of where you apply and/or interview as we continue our
relationship because I don't want to contact any employer whom you have
already contacted as I would be duplicating our efforts." I have a feeling
that they are overstepping their bounds and where I have applied or will
apply/interview is actually none of their business. I wonder if they are
just trying to find out where the openings are so they can build up their
data base for making future contacts, thereby causing more competition for
me for the jobs I have applied for on my own. Any comments on this?

About 2-3 years ago I guess, at the general Monday morning meeting, some
recruiters came in and talked to the group about various things and
afterward, fielded questions from the group. I would like to see another
meeting where we have a recruiter panel come in like that because this is a
question I would like to ask them: why they ask that question of candidates
(almost word for word as quoted above). I think every recruiter I haver ever
talked to has asked that question.

I have thought what I could say to them is something like: Well, you know
it might work better if you would tell me the name of a job that you are
considering me for and a brief job description and I can probably tell you
if I have applied for it or not. So there's no need for you to send them my
resume because we would be duplicating our efforts.

So, well, I'd just like to know if anyone else has experienced this with
recruiters and what everyone thinks about it.

  Thanks
