There is a viable, free alternative to Micro$oft Office,
Open Office, http://www.openoffice.org/
The included packages are replacements (clones ?) for the MS packages,
have the same functionality, and read and write Office formatted
files. I know several people who use the Open Office tools and
have never had any problems. Everything Mr. Voto said about
Excel is applicable to Calc, the Open Office alternative to Excel.
The only difference that I have found is the Open Office visual
presentation is not as "pretty" as that of MS Office, but I
quickly got over this very minor annoyance by recalling the
price difference.
Open Source software, including Open Office, is free, developed
and maintained by very talented volunteers. A lot of Open Source
software is used by businesses and supported and distributed by
big time software and hardware vendors like HP, Sun, Oracle.
You have used some without even knowing it. Zip, Firefox, Linux,
Apache, PERL...
