Members,
We've had an influx of new members since the subject of how
to submit profiles was last discussed, so I'll take this opportunity to go
over it for all of you. By far the simplest way is through the JSFG web
page, at www.jsfg.com All it takes is a computer with internet access:
yours at home, the library, the JSFG office, etc. On our home page, down
the right hand side of the page is a list of links to specific areas of our
website. The 4th one down is JSFG Profile Submission. Click on that and it
brings up a Profile Submission instruction sheet, at the bottom of which is
a form to be filled out. Complete all the required boxes, and be sure that
your name and e-mail address are the same as they appear on your Membership
listing when you joined JSFG. If that's changed, we need to know about it,
so we can find you to actually create the profile. The "Position
Classification" is the general industry that you want to find work in, and
is limited to the selections given in the pull down box. The "Position
Title" is the name that the job you want is known by, which will attract the
attention of an employer in that industry looking to hire someone for a
particular job. Once you've entered all the preliminary information, it's
time to create the profile in the "Profile" box. Our system is limited to a
maximum of 250 CHARACTERS, including spaces and punctuation. So you need to
be brief and efficient with your words.
In general you're looking for special skills you possess to
succeed in that job. Special training, (your degrees are covered in the
"Degree" box), particular experience, things to make you stand out from the
others. Too much about your last job, or your outstanding character, &
motivation should probably be saved for a full resume and/or interview. Due
to the space constraints, use all the generally recognized abbreviations
possible, (tech, IT, Mgr, assn, etc.), and as little punctuation as will
allow you to appear literate. Editing deemed necessary will be done by the
Profile Committee member creating the profile, or the entry returned to you
for correction if necessary.
If you already have a profile in use for previous months,
all you need do is put a note in the "Profile" box to "renew my most recent
profile", or "renew my June '04 profile". Anything to advise the Profiles
Committee and leave a paper trail that you want a renewal. The receipt
generated when you pay for your profile will also serve as notification, but
you need to advise that it's a RENEWAL you want. Just telling me that you
want to renew a profile is dangerous, I've got a lousy memory.
E-mails with all the same information, or paper copies
mailed to the JSFG office will also be accepted, but we need an extra week
to guarantee processing in time to make the current month's publication.
Please use the on-line method if at all possible. The reason is that the
web is monitored almost daily from home, and paper submissions are only
picked up on Mondays while I'm in the JSFG office anyway. The last week
before profiles go the the printer is hectic enough, and that's usually the
third week of the month.
Again, these Professional Profiles are a highly effective
and valuable resource provided by the JSFG to get your qualifications in
front of hundreds of potential employers by mail, or thousands on the
internet, every month. I very much recommend that everyone take advantage
of this resource in your job search. If there are any questions at all
about the process, or anything related to profiles, please e-mail me at
profileschair@xxxxxxxx or see me before or after a Monday general meeting.
(I'm the white haired guy at the table in the back of the room :-)
Thanks in Advance, & Good Hunting,
Dave Estell
