Please stick to topics related to JSFG or job searching. Asking for
contact information is fine; forwarding stories of dubious origin is not.
This board has two purposes: to communicate JSFG information and to
enable us to help each other find work. Accomplishing these goals
generates enough traffic that there really isn't room for anything that
is off-topic. Should something inaccurate be posted - particularly,
something that could make a dangerous situation worse - a correction is
demanded, further adding to the off-topic traffic.
With our growing membership, it becomes increasingly important that we
stick to the task at hand: finding work. Anyone who desires
clarification on this point is welcome to contact me directly; please do
NOT reply to the ListServ.
A Few Words About Urban Legends
There are a considerable number of urban legends circulating on the
internet. Some are fact-based but many are not. These stories all have a
ring of truth and are meant to alarm you. Before forwarding them to your
friends, check out the Urban Legends Reference Pages at www.snopes.com .
"The Knockoff Pullover" page ( www.snopes.com/horrors/mayhem/fakecop.htm
) gives an example of the 'fake police officer' story and describes its
origins. Notice that much of the text is the same but the story is
substantially different from what was posted here. Again, this is typical.
Personally, I am fascinated by urban legends. But I don't want to see
them on the JSFG ListServ.
