[jsfg_cinti] Please check your computer for viruses

For the last couple of months, I have been receiving virus-infested
e-mail messages on a regular basis. Perhaps you have received them as
well. There is a 99% probability that the messages are coming from the
computer of someone who is associated with JSFG.

I'm asking each of you to do two things:

1) Never open an e-mail attachment - even if you know the sender well -
unless you were expecting it.

2) Check your computer for viruses. Remember to update your virus
definitions before you start and at least once each week thereafter. New
viruses are released every day.

If your computer doesn't have antivirus software installed, run a free
online virus scan (visit
http://w3.iac.net/~thump/virusscan/Free_AntiVirus_scan.htm for more
information on free scans). When you're done, install a real-time
antivirus program; you can't afford to be without one.

In a recent survey of households with internet access, 7 percent (the
equivalent of 13 million internet users) reported permanent loss of
critical data files, and 4 percent (8 million) spent $100 or more
repairing virus-inflicted damage.

You need three things for your computer: up-to-date, real-time antivirus
software; antispyware; and, if you have broadband service such as
RoadRunner or ZoomTown, a firewall. If you don't have all three, you are
asking for trouble. For straightforward advice on protecting yourself
online, check out the September 2004 issue of Consumer Reports.

You know, the particular virus that's plaguing us is only a few months
old. It's still young and impressionable. Maybe if we adopted it, we
could get it off its destructive path. Can anyone think of a good name
for a Beagle?
