[jsfg_cinti] Output from Small Group Discussion

To all JSFG Members and Friends,

The following comments are from the small group discussion session held at
the August 11 JSFG Members' Meeting. The issue for the day was: "You
successfully completed the interview process and an offer for a new position
has been made to you. Now, what is negotiable before accepting the offer?"

1. Compensation issues such as salary, bonus level participation, one-time
signing bonus, participation in profit sharing plan.

2. Flextime

3. Health benefits or perhaps add-on features such as vision, dental or time
benefits start. (my guess is that you will need to take what the firm offers
simply because of the firm's contractual arrangements with its health care
provider)

4. Payment of professional dues.

5. Special equipment to perform better in the assigned role. Items such as
cell phone, computer equipment, company credit card, company car allowance,
second home phone line for fax machine.

6. Extra vacation time (this has no direct cash cost because few white
collar position are filled with temps during vacation periods)

7. Travel expenses and ability to accumulate frequent flier/hotel points.

8. Accelerated review time schedule and possible promotion opportunities

9. Training and educational assistance for graduate degrees such as
traditional MBA programs, computer software training, seminars, certificate
programs, other continuing education.

10. Relocation expenses

11. You may need to be prepared to give something back for something new
that is important to you.

12. An unanswered issue was raised about having an employment contract
stipulating that you are guaranteed employment for six months to a year and
that as long as it is not performance related they you are entitled to a
full year of severance at your base salary if you are dismissed.
