Organizing Your Job Hunt

Job-hunting can be stressful enough without being in a situation that finds
you lacking information or preparation. The following is a ?start? of an
ongoing document designed to make you job hunting more efficient and
productive for your prospects and your time.

Learning Objectives:

1. Who, What, When, Where, Why, Whom, and How?

2. Examples to modify to meet your personal and professional requirements.

3. Create a JSFG Job Hunting Manual?

1. Who, What, When, Where, Why, Whom, and How?

Who-
You the Job Hunter! As the JSFG may allow you to have multiple profiles if
there additional career aspirations, you may also create different resumes
tailored for job opportunities.

What-
Everything needed to fill out job applications and present your self in the
most professional manner- the application process is sometimes the only
impression an employer may get of you!
i) On site: bring your binder and erasable pen [make the allocation neat!]
ii) For on line use, create your ?electronic generic application? to copy
and paste from.
iii) Know yourself-check credit report regularly-

Credit Reports

http://www.ag.state.oh.us/press_releases/2005/pr20050225a.htm

When-
Continuous Improvement [Kaizen] ? Nothing is worse than an employer
contacting you and you forget information about your contact.
i) Document as you go.
ii) Maintain planning and master record sheet on daily basis [or other
suitable ?cheat sheet?].
iii) Follow-up, follow-up, follow-up!

Where-
Everywhere- Never go anywhere without business cards and keep electronic
data, binder, and resumes in auto. Dress appropriately and great grooming
too! Checkout www.asktheheadhunter.com

Why-
Be your best for you know never when you run into that old contact,
prospective employer, etc. [Brag! The Art of Tooting Your Own Horn Without
Blowing It! By Peggy Klaus http://www.bragbetter.com

Whom-
Verify Names and addresses of old employers, schools, and references.
Maintain contact from references and get ?buy in? from them prior to using
them. Professional references are the most important and are those who have
worked with you in the past or presently. Stive for five!

How-
Use printable and electronic Media [floppy, CD, flash drive].

2. Examples:

a) Interview Binder sections:

                                                            i) Note taking
and questions for employer- see ?200 Questions Job Seekers Might Ask? from
http://www.jsfg.com
ii) Research on firm: Internet, stock profile [if available], Dun and
Bradstreet Reports, etc.
?What do you know about our firm??
iii) History- experience/portfolio of what you have accomplished in field
including what you have done in the face of overwhelming odds, lack of
resources, etc.
                                                   iv) References- Copy of
transcripts, names and addresses of former employers, personal/professional
references.
v) Business cards and resumes.

b)?Electronic copy of generic job application? Think of the worst, most
grueling on line application you have ever filled out! Application includes
Name and contact information, education, previous employers, references,
special comments, etc. Did it have spell check? How long did it take? Copy
and paste instead of retyping again and again and again!

c) Planning sheet- Bob Riess , Innovative Training Solutions
[JSFG presenter 2.7.05] www.innovativetrainingservices.com

d) Master Record Sheet- Just do it! Includes Names, dates, follow-ups,
email/web sites, etc.

e) File box-Maintain files on your prospects, recruiters, etc.

3. JSFG Job Hunter?s Manual? This presentation offered to JSFG as potential
first chapter of ?perpetual working document? on job hunting.
