Dear JSFG Folks,
This is a reposting of information originally posted
by Bruce Strickland. I am reposting the edited
material since his original was garbled in
transmission and difficult (at least for me) to read.
I hope you find this useful.
Regards,
Lance Feldman

ODN - Special Event and Job Openings
SPECIAL EVENT:
Join us for a lively discussion on this urgent,
essential book that tells for the first time the story
of our long and gradual surrender to layoffs - from a
writer who has covered the unwinding for nearly twenty
years and who now bears witness.
What?:
Special invitation to hear the author of a new
business book that promises to be a very big seller.
Following Louis Uchitelle's presentation regarding his
new book, "The Disposable American: Layoffs and Their
Consequences", our local chapter of the Organization
Development Network will host a targeted discussion
for OD professionals with the author.
When?:
Wednesday, April 19 at 7:00 pm (begins with
presentation open to the general public, followed by a
targeted discussion for OD professionals)
Where?:
Joseph-Beth Booksellers, Rookwood Pavilion, 2692
Madison Road, Hyde Park. 513-396-8960. No Charge!
Details?:
* Lou Uchitelle discusses and signs "The Disposable
American"
* Co-hosted with the Greater Cincinnati & Dayton
Organization Development Network (ODN).
"The Disposable American" is an eye-opening account of
layoffs in America - their questionable necessity,
their overuse, and their devastating impact on
individuals at all income levels. Yet despite all
this, layoffs are accelerating.
In a compelling narrative, the award-winning New York
Times economics writer Louis Uchitelle traces the rise
of job security in the United States to its heyday in
the 1950s and 1960s, and then the panicky U-turn. He
describes the unraveling through the experiences of
both executives and workers with actual case histories
including local companies right here in Cincinnati.
Louis Uchitelle worked as a reporter, a foreign
correspondent, and the editor of the business news
department at the Associated Press before joining The
New York Times in 1980. He has been writing about
business, labor, and economics for the Times since
1987. He was the lead reporter for the Times series
"The Downsizing of America" which won a George Polk
Award in 1996. He has taught at Columbia University
and was a visiting scholar at the Russell Sage
Foundation in New York in 2002-2003.
