Notes And Observations Of The Tuesday February 18th Meeting Of The ITSIG
1) Job available, and skill sets. Unwavering, companies are seeking
exact credentials. It is said to be an employer?s market. Many jobs are
going unfilled because companies, remaining uncommitted, are not finding an
exact match.
2) Technology issues: VB DOT NET vs Java Enterprise. There was a rumor
that because VB .NET was so convoluted and difficult to learn, Microsoft is
going to do away with VB and transition everyone to C Sharp (C#).
3) There were discussions about contracting, outsourcing and permanent.
How much outsourcing is really occurring? Is this trend likely to continue?
If we all get short-term contracts, what will happen with the next down turn
or flutter in the economy?
4) It was said that recruiters are hiring from out of state as a
filtering technique to get younger more committed people.
5) Health Insurance cost for older workers: Is this a major concern for
companies with rising benefit costs?
6) It was suggested that hiring managers are often younger than most
out of work IT people.
7) Because of long periods of unemployment, a higher salary is no
longer an issue with older experienced people.
8) There was a discussion about companies testing people on their IT
knowledge. How exacting are these tests? In an emerging economy with
companies demanding experience with very specific skills, most older IT
people are generalists.
9) Hidden in the flock was a Recruiter from MRI. After revealing
himself, he had no possibilities for anyone in the room. Like the fore
mentioned issue #1, he too had 4 or 5 local clients that had exact needs.
10) This recruiter said that we should concentrate our efforts on
networking smaller companies rather the big box concerns like Fifth Third,
Kroger, American Financial, and Anthem, who are seeking very specific
skills.
