A few questions have been posed regarding the low-cost computers offer.
Following are responses to those FAQs.
With a group purchase like this one, Cincinnati Computer Cooperative (C3)
typically selects systems from one of their corporate donations so that all
systems are identical. For the sake of consistency and ease of production,
all systems will have the same size hard drive, same brand and speed of
processor and same expandability characteristics (memory, drives, CD drives,
etc.) However, by the nature of their business, C3 cannot and does not
guarantee any particular brand or size of hard drive, brand or speed of
processor, etc.
What brand, size and speed is the CPU?
The computer system itself will most likely be HP, Compaq or Dell and
usually in the form of a mini-tower. In many cases systems have Intel
Pentium 4 processors, usually 2.0 Ghz or faster, but the processor may be a
similar style and speed from AMD.
Either way, there should be no problem running Windows XP or any compatible
software. To get a sense of the systems C3 is currently selling, take a
look at the units in the JSFG office and library.
What size and speed is the hard drive?
The hard drive provided will be at least 40GB and speed will most likely be
5400 or 7200 RPM. Since hard drive size and speed is dictated by what's in
a system when it's donated, considering that the computers are 3-5 years
old, 40GB hard drives are fairly common. Although C3 is beginning to get
computers with larger hard drives, they cannot guarantee any particular size
and speed.
Is the RAM (memory) expandable?
As with brand, processor type and hard drive size and speed, expandability
(memory and otherwise) is totally dependent on what is available in
inventory when an order is processed. Most systems C3 is refurbishing at
this time use reasonably current memory (usually DDR) that is generally
available at very affordable prices. Systems typically have two (2) or four
(4) memory slots and will accommodate maximum memory of 1GB or more --
sometimes up to 4GB.
When will my computer be ready for pickup?
All computers purchased through JSFG will be processed by C3 at the same
time. The cut-off date for purchase and payment is Monday, Dec 29, so the
order will probably be received by C3 during the first week of Jan 2009.
Considering that C3 is an all-volunteer organization and allowing at least
two weeks for production, delivery should take place around Jan 20, 2009.
While C3 will make every reasonable effort to meet that goal, delivery in
that timeframe is not guaranteed -- please be patient.
To reiterate, particular brand and style of computer and brands and speeds
of components is totally dependent on what is in inventory at the time an
order is processed.
