[jsfg_cinti] Low-cost Computers from Cincinnati Computer Cooperative

At yesterday's meeting, Bob Pautke again mentioned that JSFG has put
together a program with Cincinnati Computer Cooperative (C3) for JSFG
members to purchase refurbished computer systems at very low cost. A few
people had questions, so I wanted to provide some specifics and clarify a
few points.

The refurbished computers are systems that have been rebuilt by C3's
volunteer staff and are generally 3-5 years old. All systems include the
CPU, monitor, keyboard, mouse, cables and speakers, and come with a fully
licensed copy of Windows XP and Microsoft Office XP (2002) Standard. The
monitor provided is a flat-screen CRT that is at least 17". All systems
have at least 512MB RAM, include a modem and are network-ready (in case you
have broadband Internet.) and come with anti-virus software.

Below are answers to frequently asked questions:

Q - Does the system have a CD-RW, DVD or DVD-RW drive?

A - The system will come with at least a CD-RW drive. Sometimes a system
will arrive with a better drive, which will remain in the system as it is
refurbished. You may request a particular kind of drive, but there is no
guarantee it will be available at the time your system is built.

Q - What specific programs come with Office XP (2002) Standard?

A - Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint

Q - Can I purchase additional software and get it installed on the system?

A - C3 does not sell any additional software and cannot install other
software due to licensing restrictions. Purchase and installation of
anything other than C3-provided software is the sole responsibility of the
individual user.

Q - Can I get a particular brand of system?

A - You may request a specific brand, but systems are refurbished
individually from the available stock. The brand of system is entirely
dependent on what's in stock at the time your system is put together. Final
choice of system is at the discretion of C3.

Q - What kind of warranty comes with the system?

A - Every system includes a full coverage, virtually unlimited (except for
obvious abuse) one-year warranty.

Q - Can I get an LCD monitor with my system?

A - No. We do not provide LCD monitors with any system.

Q - Can I get a printer with my system?

A - No. While C3 does get donated printers, most of them are worn out and
do not work.

Q - Can I purchase more than one computer through this program?

A - Yes, however all systems must be purchased through JSFG and then only by
current, paid JSFG members. No individual orders can be accepted. C3 does
offer computers through several programs which have their own specific
qualification criteria.

Q - Can a purchase a laptop through this program?

A - No. C3 does get many laptops donated. However, they are usually broken
or too old to refurbish. While C3 does get some laptops that can be
refurbished, those systems are reserved for sale or donation to teachers in
greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky.

If you want to get a good idea of what the systems look like, check out the
"new" units in the JSFG office. These are similar systems that were
purchased previously from C3.
