[jsfg_cinti] Re: King's Island wants applicants social security number to apply for job opportunities.

I understand your concern, and unfortunately there's just no way to know how
secure a company's intranet is. However, companies want your SSN on
applications so they can do background checks and a lot of companies
(including the major Cinci employer I work for) use SSN on everything
including benefits and even if you make a charitable donation via a payroll
deduction. I agree that the companies should instead be using an employee
identification # and not your SSN, but I don't think that's a winnable
battle especially when you're in the position of trying to get hired.

You could also check your credit report to monitor for identity theft -
since each of the 3 big credit agencies is required to give you a free
report each year, you can "rotate" and get a report every 4 months.
www.annualcreditreport.com. Hmm, although the website seems to be down
tonight. Watch out for other websites that may claim to be the federally
mandated free credit report as mentioned on this web site

Good luck in your job search

Subject: [jsfg_cinti] King's Island wants applicants social security number
to apply for job opportunities.

Hello all:

Well, to update everyone about the above situation where they are asking
for social security number on their online application web page:

I called my attorney in Columbus to ask him his opinion about this and he
told me that what they are doing is not illegal,(I assume he means, at least
not in Ohio). But he said he didn't see why it was necessary for an
employer to ask for a SS# just to do a background check on an applicant
until they have decided to hire that person. And why would they want to go
to all that trouble anyway of doing background checks on all applicants when
not all applicants will probably be hired.

Anyway, I called the office of Kings Island and I told them that I wanted
to apply for a job but I am not comfortable putting my SS# out on the
Internet, so they said I could come to their office and put in an
application in person and that way they will only put it on their Intranet.
Well, I still don't feel comfortable having my SS# on their Intranet unless
I am going to be hired., although it is probably more secure than putting it
out on the Internet.

Of course the jobs are just seasonal and not even in my usual line of
work, but it might be fun and a chance to make some money.

  Any opinions?

  Thanks

  Bill
