[jsfg_cinti] Jobservatory & Struts - LAN Party

All, (Sorry for the premature message. cinci.rr.com was not allowing
emails to be received from or sent to yahoo.com. For some reason, they were
being bounced.)

Anyway, the Jobservatory meeting is tomorrow, May 27, 2004 at 10:00 am,
scheduled in RM 202 of HPUMC.

What is...Jobservatory???

As you know, Job Search Focus Group has a web site located at www.jsfg.com.
Currently the web site is limited in so far as data entry and inquiry
capabilities are concerned. The Jobservatory project is to give our web
site capabilities to allow the JSFG patron to enter in confidence their
resume and have it viewed by prospective employers...the same as say,
Monster or Dice.com. The platform we have chosen for this project is Java
J2EE development environment and Jakarta Struts with JSP. We are also
currently using MySQL for database development. All of the software tools
are provided for free.

According to the recent Job ads, Java JSPs are becoming very prevalent in
Cincinnati.

So, why come? First of all, several people in our current group have
obtained positions as a direct result of this project.

Why come? Learn a new technology, do something worthwhile for JSFG and add
real experience to your resume.

Also, Lance Feldman (JSFG computer committee chair) is starting a Java
Certification Class that he will given during the Jobservatory meetings.
The text that will be use is: Complete Java 2: Certification Study Guide
(third or fourth edition) by Simon Roberts, et al. Amazon.com has copies
starting at $4.49 used.

Again, we meet on the second floor in Room 202 outside the JSFG office. The
reason we meet here is that we have a secure private 802.11b or d wireless
connection to the Internet, each other and for accessing the central code
repository, etc.

Everyone brings his or her own laptop with either an Ethernet card/connecter
or 802.11 b/d wireless card. We do have hardware hub capabilities.

NOTE. The Jobservatory project has taken on new urgency. The provider of
our JSFG web page's database has decided to charge a significant amount per
month...far more than JSFG can afford. This affects the usability of
Calendar of Events, Profiles, internal functions such as membership lists,
etc, The loss of these capabilities will significantly hurt JSFG.

So, come and join the LAN party...and help with a worthwhile cause.
