[jsfg_cinti] Job Search Focus Group broadcast email service (listserve)

Good Evening JSG Broadcast Email Subscribers;
There has been an increase in the use of the JSFG broadcast email service
(listserve) in recent weeks. Many good things are happening at JSFG -
attendance is up, interaction has increased, the quality of speakers and
training is improving, and more employers and recruiters are connecting with
JSFG each day. And as a result some increase in traffic over our broadcast
email service has occurred - this is good!

Some message however have been inappropriate to the stated purpose of
this service.

As a rule of thumb, if you have a legitimate career question, job posting,
or related item of interest to a wide population of JSFG members (and the
many other subscribers), then by all means share it. Collaborative efforts
serve members well, is a form of networking, and is what the service and
JSFG were designed to do. Some 90% + of the time the useful answer or
response ought to be directed solely to the originator, and not as a
subsequent broadcast (or "reply to" listserve). Infrequently does a response
rise to the level of being of interest to all subscribers.

During the past week some have asked me to implement stronger rules and/or a
gate-keeper to approve all messages. I decline to do so. We are all adults
and can use sound judgement as to when and how to use this important service
properly and to the advantage of job seekers and employers. Additional or
draconian rules will not resolve the small amount of misuse we currently
have, but will thwart healthy and useful exchanges of information.

Please refrain from using the broadcast email service to comment on
personalities, challenge individual motivations, tell jokes, or for training
tutorials (i.e., the excel training messages. Though useful, this is not
proper use of this service). And remember that anything you publish via this
service cannot be deleted, remaining accessible to any- and everyone with
access to the online world. Remember also that patience is a virtue, and
kindness to all exemplary.

The new JSFG website, www.jobsearchfocusgroup.com is being phased in, and
has discussion board capabilities (including subscription for alert
notifications). When fully operational they will provide forums for
exchanging training information, discussing various topics of
interest, while maintaining the threads of each discussion. Stay tuned for
more details.

In the meantime please stick to the use of the listserve as it was intended
and as per stated policy:

My intent here is not to cut down or limit useful collaboration and
discussion, but to direct communications to the proper channels and for the
proper purposes.

Thank you for your understanding and support.

If you have a comment or suggestion on this matter please send it to me
directly.

Regards,
  -Bob
