RE: Request for Advocacy Assistance and/or Advice

I stopped in to the JSFG office today to inquire about
assistance for a jobless person who is currently without a
car, lives in Newport Ky., and is soon to be evicted. The
JSFG office staff suggested I present my request to the JSFG
Listserve.

Recently I received a call from an elderly friend of mine
who was very distressed about a person she has known for
years, who had experienced an injury outside of work, which
resulted in his not being able to work for about 3 months
now. There was no unemployment compensation available, and
his only assistance has been food stamps, so he has had to
sell all his furniture to pay rent and daily expenses. I
suggested she pick him up and meet me at the library where I
could help him with his resume and cover letter, which we
did. I told him about JSFG and offered to drive him to a
couple of meetings, but he had found a short-term job by
that time so declined. My friend telephoned me late last
night, all upset again, saying the guy?s shoulder has been
re-injured due to him trying to do some light manual work.
Here are the details?I am asking you to please review and
respond if you have any ideas, resources, or can help in any
way:

IMMEDIATE NEED:
He needs $350 for the remaining May rent and will need $450
for June rent.

COMMUNICATIONS:
He has maintained his email address via the local library
(he is w/in walking distance) and has a pay-per-use cell
phone, which costs him $1-a-day, so he can be contacted via
email and cell phone...cell phone number is on his Resume
attached hereto.

BACKGROUND/EXPERIENCE:
I do not know anything about this guy?seems like
reasonably decent person
I don?t know his age, but would guess late 30s/early 40s
Work experience is in restaurant and construction industries
His true interest is in artistic field?he has some Art
education
Attached to this email is his Resume and Cover Letter if you
want to know more

SOCIAL SERVICES:
Has been able to get food stamps, but no other assistance
Has letter from doctor saying he can work if it does not
involve him lifting/using his shoulder?social worker told
him he has to be disabled for 6 mos before can apply for any
other type of help...he has been disabled for 3 or 4 months
now.

TRANSPORTATION:
He can ride the bus, but he does not have money to pay for
bus ride at this time. I do not know status of his drivers
license or why he does not have a car. I suggested he
contact Goodwill and/or St. Vincent DePaul re: help with
getting a car, and told him to also send them his Resume and
Cover Letter to see if they could help him with job search.
He says he contacted them, but I do not know current status
of his communications w/them.

OTHER:
Does anyone have experience with short-term disability
issues or know where he can go to get some help?
Does anyone live in N.Ky., and would be willing to be an
advocate/mentor to him? (He is extremely emotionally upset
right now?landlord is calling him every day, telling him
he?s going to serve an eviction notice...he seems to be
"stuck" and either without skills to self-advocate, or
simply too upset to do so)

Thanks for any help you can offer?I?ll try one more time
to see if he wants to go to JSFG on next Monday.

Tessa
