Ask your agent or a friend or relative who needs the business about "temporary 
or short-term insurance."  You can buy that for six months at a time.  I use it 
to protect against something major ruining me financially.  Right now I have a 
John Alden policy for my wife and me (both age 55) at $150 a month and $2,500 
deductible.  I am willing to pay out of pocket for minor stuff - that requires 
a shift from the thinking that insurance is supposed to pay for everything.  
(The high deductible brings down the premium.)  Some people can't make that 
change in thinking.  They are like people who insist on taking the expressway, 
when the streets would be shorter and get you there in the same time.  Other 
temporary policies I've used are Golden Rule, and American Community.  (I heard 
that Time is not recommended.)
