DON PHIN: When and How to Hire Your Next Employee
You are running a consulting business, hardware store, advertising firm...you
name it. Your business is growing. So much so you are starting to feel a bit
overwhelmed, and perhaps so are a few others working with you. The question you
are struggling with is if and when you should hire the next employee.
Like you, I have gone through this challenge, as have so many of my clients.
Let's start by considering what you are doing. What activities should you be
delegating? Who should you delegate them to and how does that end up defining
whom you ought to hire?

GEORGE LENARD: Top Tips for Avoiding Legal Trouble with Employees
Being aware of the legal aspects of the hiring process is important, but an
underlying knowledge of general employment law is a necessary foundation.
To some extent, legal claims by applicants, employees, and former employees are
an inevitable aspect of doing business. When such claims strike, they can be

arise...

a good reason to do so. Hiring for attitude means that you won't have to fire
people who don't fit into your culture.
But that still isn't easy. Finding people who can fit into the culture of your
organization, whether that culture is specific to a project or pervades the
entire organization, is not a trivial matter. The first step is to understand
your culture so you can determine whether a candidate will fit into that
culture...

*** Tip of the Week
Don't hire anyone unless it improves the average of the company. It's not
uncommon for growing companies to begin by hiring 8s and 9s and 10s, on a scale
of 1 to 10. But too often, as the business matures, hires are made who are 6s
and 7s. This leads to hiring 4s and 5s. Set this simple hiring rule for
maintaining the strength that launched your business.
*** Ask Jeff: Questions answered from Monster Inc.'s founder, JEFF TAYLOR.
Jeff, what's your opinion on the value of hiring freshly minted MBAs as opposed
to college grads with a couple of years of real word experience?
Jeff Taylor: I'm a strong believer in both strong work experience and advanced
education, so I wouldn't view it as an either/or proposition. In today's
competitive work environment, having a college degree is ...
