Dear Fellow Job Seekers,
We just had another person from the steering committee accept a job. Be
warned, volunteers get jobs faster than others.
By the way, we have some great openings on the steering committee.
Please apply.

Hello Steering Committee:
Listed below is my graduation presentation to share with JSFG members. I
would have liked to deliver this in person but my first day of work is on
2/13/06.
Thanks for all your help
Lee
First and foremost, I want to thank the members of the Steering committee
for their support and camaraderie toward moving the JSFG organization
forward. Also thanks to everyone for your insight and help in keeping the
Training programs focused and relevant.
Tips and lessons learned on Lee's journey to employment:
1. Maintain your spiritual center - this helps to keep you balance and
to recognize what is really important.
2. Volunteer at JSFG - activity equals confidence and confidence equals
a job.
3. Learn how to listen effectively - this is a key skill in effective
networking.
4. Focus on the journey and your inner true north not how many months
of being unemployed. Searching for a job is like mining for gold - there is
a lot of dirt your have to move before you find gold. Take the Project
Manager approach and track your success at moving all the dirt - this puts
the progress on the radar screen.
5. Whatever your professional identity is, i.e., Engineer, Scientist,
Teacher, Lawyer, or HR through it out the window - your new job description
is a Job Seeker. Put your energy into becoming the very best "Job Seeker" a
skill you must have to be successful. How do you get these skills? By
taking training courses offered at JSFG and other organizations.
6. Accept the fact that there is no easy formula for getting a job. No
matter how perfect your resume is - the determining factor to an interview
is a judgment call. So take a non-traditional approach to finding a job
such as: meeting people on neutral ground like attending the METS
(www.usemets.org <http://www.usemets.org/> ) or attending meeting associated
with your profession. Take the salesman approach and learn how to sell the
value of your professional skills. Watch for companies showing a profit in
the stock market and check their web site for career opportunities. Attend
the Chamber meetings learn how to start a small business - after all you are
a small business of one seeking employment.
7. Learn how to gather intelligence, i.e., network with HR
Professionals on neutral ground by attending the HR-Roundtable meetings or
HR100 meetings. This information may help you in becoming a better "Job
Seeker".
8. Form a "Coffee Club" with at least four members of JSFG with diverse
backgrounds and meet every two weeks and share information on both successes
and what's not working. In order for this to work effectively you must have
diverse professional backgrounds - this will eliminate fear of sharing
information. Also you must have a planned agenda and a strong facilitator
to keep the group focused.
9. Take advantage of all opportunities - for example the franchising
workshop may be of little interest to you, but remember you are already a
franchise of one seeking employment. There is the strong possibility you
may learn how to better sell yourself.
10. Take time to learn something that is fun and new.
