Keith,
You did not miss a job posting. An unknown malicious person sent a message
with an attachment to the listserv. That attachment contained a virus. The
listserv converted the attachment to the "garbage" that you saw in your
message. As best I understand, you can only infect your computer if you
OPEN the attachment that contains the virus. In your case, your email
reader did not present you with a separate attachment that you could open.
It was simply included as many lines of strange characters. You VIEWED the
attachment, but did not OPEN or EXECUTE it. Basically I am sure that you
are safe.
Whenever you receive an email with an attachment, Never OPEN or EXECUTE it
unless you are sure that it is safe. At the least, you should save the
attachment to your hard disk and then examine it with a current virus
detection program. Saving the attachment to the hard disk should not cause
a problem PROVIDED that you do not actually run the file after you save it.
Double clicking the file (in Explorer) after it is saved is a definite NO
NO since that will open and execute the file. On my Windows PC, I right
click a suspicious file once after saving it. A context menu appears with
the option to scan the file for viruses. I assume that your MAC has a
similar option.
I am very sorry for the inconvenience. We usually catch these malicious
messages before they get sent to the listserv.
