[jsfg_cinti] Federal unemployment benefits

Just a short follow-up re: regular state unemployment benefits vs
federal extended benefits.

1. Each state provides up to 26 weeks of regular unemployment benefits.

2. During 2002 - 2003, the federal government provided extended
benefits. Basically, "for workers who exhausted their state benefits
before December 21, 2003, the program has provided up to 13 weeks of
extended benefits (or half of the worker's total state benefits,
whichever is less)." This program expired, however bills have continued
to be introduced in the House of Representatives and Senate to extend
this program. Contacting your representatives/congressmen to ask for
their support can make a difference.

I've met quite a few people at JSFG who have been unemployed longer than
6 months & have used up their state unemployment.

3. For more information, see www.unemployedworkers.org. This web site
has lots of information, you can sign up to be on their mailing list to
be kept up-to-date on the unemployment benefits (typically I get 1 or 2
emails per month), and provides resources such as how to contact your
representatives/congressman.

Thanks,
Ellen Hynes
