[jsfg_cinti] FW: Cantwell Amendment Blocked

 All:
Update on unemployment extension. Please call your congressman and
senators and express your support for this issue. Sadly our
"representatives" are using specifically chosen economic indicators for
political reasons and are turning their backs to hard working folks like
us. It is vital that you make your voice heard.

Cantwell Amendment Blocked -

On Tuesday, we reported that Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-WA) was trying to
bring a vote on federal extended benefits to the floor of the U.S.
Senate by amending the Highway Construction Bill (S. 1072).

Her effort to do so was blocked by the Republican leadership using
procedural rules. Under these rules, the Senate can limit the number of
amendments that are considered on each bill. With the list already
full, Sen. Cantwell was unable to offer her amendment for a vote.

Once again, members of the Senate were not pushed to vote their
conscience on the issue of reactivating federal unemployment benefits.
When members of the House had the opportunity to vote their conscience,
it was a clear that a bipartisan majority understood that these benefits
are needed until the jobs situation truly recovers.

The Senate will be out of session for the President's Day recesss -
returning on February 24th, 2004. The next opportunity to bring up the
extended benefits issue is likely to be S. 1751 - the Class Action
Fairness Act. We'll bring you more information about targets and
talking points shortly.

Your U.S. Senator will likely be in your state next week. Call their
local office and inquire about town hall meetings or other opportunities
where you can voice your concern that extended unemployment benefits
must be taken up as soon as they return from the President's Week Break.

You should be able to find your Senator's office by clicking on his or
her home page at <http://action.nelp.org/ctt.asp?u=1515085&l=18123>

It is frustrating that we could not capitalize on the momentum from last
week's House vote, this week. Friends of the unemployed in Washington,
D.C. plan to continue their efforts. We hope you will stay with the
cause as well!

Sincerely,

The National Employment Law Project
