SUMMARY 

Contributes to the overall management and production of the Finance and 
Accounting area with a specific focus on cash balancing, suspense, fixed assets 
and taxes.  Acts as a partner to Finance Department customers by providing 
timely, accurate, complete, and relevant financial information as well as 
providing practical insight into business situations.   Works with other 
functional areas of the company to identify business risks and opportunities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Financial Reporting and Analysis
Develop, implement and review financial reports including:

Statutory tax reports and analysis in accordance with SSAP 10

Premium tax analysis 

Suspense reports, analysis and measures
Bank account reconciliation measures

Bank fee analysis;

Reports to monitor the capitalization of internally developed software and 
other capitalized internal costs

Compliance with unclaimed property requirements.
 
Supervise Finance Department Personnel
Provide guidance, direction and review the work of finance/accounting personnel 
performing functions including daily cash balancing, bank reconciliations, 
suspense investigation, premium tax accounting and fixed asset accounting.  
Ensure that appropriate internal controls are present, operating and 
appropriately documented to comply with the requirements of Sarbanes Oxley.

Work with Corporate Tax Department and Outsourced Tax Providers
Work with Corporate Tax Department and Tax Service Providers to develop or 
refine tax processes for both GAAP and STAT reporting.  Interact with gather, 
analyze and provide information to Corporate Tax Department and outside tax 
provider necessary for both Statutory and GAAP tax calculations.  Review and 
evaluate GAAP and STAT tax calculations and the resulting financial statement 
presentation to ensure compliance with Statutory Accounting Principles and GAAP.

Interact with Insurance Operations
Interact and work with insurance operations personnel regarding system 
accounting issues, including suspense issues, to ensure that both system 
calculations and ledger recording are appropriate. 

TASKS/ACTIVITIES/PROCESSES

Develop, implement and review financial information and analyses.

Research accounting issues as necessary to ensure continued compliance with 
GAAP and Statutory accounting.

Coordinate and support external auditing/consulting activities.

Manage forethought STAT and GAAP tax processes.

Provide guidance, direction and support to direct reports regarding accounting, 
insurance and business issues.

Interact with operations regarding suspense issues and other policy accounting 
issues to ensure that system calculations are appropriate and are captured 
appropriately in the general ledger.

Implement and/or coordinate continuous improvement efforts to further enhance 
the timeliness, accuracy and relevance of information provided to customers of 
the accounting/finance department.  

Interact with finance/accounting customers to identify how finance/accounting 
can add value by providing information, guidance and insight.

Review completed work and oversee activities of all direct reports.

Complete courses; attend conferences, and review industry and technical 
periodicals as necessary to maintain required knowledge.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience 
A Bachelors degree with a major in accounting and CPA designation is required. 
An advanced degree and/or other insurance related designations are desirable. 
Five to ten years of work experience in insurance accounting or auditing is 
required. 

Language Skills
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret accounting, insurance and general 
business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or 
governmental regulations.
 
Ability to write reports and various other types of business correspondence. 

Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from 
superiors, subordinates and peers  

Mathematical Skills     
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical 
inference enabling the performance of data analyses and studies as required

Ability to understand the mathematical concepts applied to the development and 
maintenance of all Forethought products

effectively analyze and interpret financial information
