The Director of Biostatistics will have responsibility for the technical and operational aspects of the Biostatistics department as well as P&L responsibility. This individual will be responsible for assisting in the expansion of our client's Biostatistical business and increasing the size department in order to meet the increased business need. The Director Biostatistics will ensure that the activities of this department are consistent with the strategic goals and direction of our client. Responsible for the day-to-day management of the statistical activities of the Biostatistics (BIO) department within Biometrics Strategic Business Unit at local office(s) in a manner assuring quality and efficiency. Establish staffing requirements, budgeting, equipment and space needs for the local department(s). Work cooperatively with other Directors of Biostatistics in establishing Biostatistics standards and practices. Directly manage, supervise and mentor the Biostatisticians and other personnel in the department at the local office. To coordinate and/or conduct and/or participate, or manage, in any or all assigned biostatistical activities for the design, implementation, data summarization/statistical analysis and reporting of clinical trials. CORE RESPONSIBILITIES: Administrative: Plan, prioritize and direct the daily Biostatistics activities and department staff to achieve on-time quality sponsor deliverables, contractual project requirements, utilization goals and profitable results. Continuously evaluate resources, budget, office space, temporary and permanent staff, equipment and training necessary for the local Biostatistics staff to successfully perform their job and ensure that these needs are proactively provided and account for future growth. Maintain a positive and professional relationship with Sponsors. Interact with sponsors as required to provide a high standard of customer service, ensure complete understanding of our client's Biostatistics responsibilities and sponsors' expectations relative to each project. Create an environment in which others set goals, demonstrate commitment to quality, professionalism, cooperation and customer service, openly communicate, exercise discretion and take reasonable risks. Work cooperatively with other local Kendle departments, e.g., Scientific Programming, Clinical Data Management, Information Technologies, Regulatory, etc. to develop or implement coordinated plans that meet department or Kendle goals. Develop methods to assist in establishing activity level cost information, track the overall department and project specific performance measures and review department profit margins. Create and support policy and procedures which maximize department resources, support the vision of Biometrics and Kendle and consistently improve the quality and efficiency of providing customer deliverables. In concert with Project Managers, establish project level budget requirements, routinely monitor departmental activities against these budgets to insure departmental operations are within budget constrains and follow through on changes in project scope or improve efficiency to maintain budget. Assist and support Biostatistics/Scientific Programming sales and marketing efforts by developing project bid proposals, participating at bid defense meetings or presenting sponsor proposals as requested. Meet with biostatisticians routinely regarding budgets, timelines, quality, data issues, workflow and training needs for current and planned projects and monitor the quality of their work products. Routinely solicit ideas from staff, encourage staff to contribute ideas and opinions in planning sessions and incorporate staff input into decisions which affect the department. Set challenging, yet achievable, goals for the department and support efforts to achieve those goals. Develop reward and recognition structures that identify and reinforce successful behavior. Employ staff development to facilitate succession planning and maintain a staff with necessary skills, abilities and competencies. Motivate staff by promoting learning, providing opportunities for growth, recognizing staff contributions and acknowledging successes personally, publicly and professionally. Provide acceptable cost justification for headcount increases, training requests, facility changes, and salary marked adjustments. Provide input to job performance reviews for other Kendle associates as requested. Provide valuable input into the development of Biometrics SOPs, guidelines, policies and procedures. Keep staff informed about organizational goals, long-term vision and initiatives. Facilitate mutually beneficial resolutions to conflicts between groups or individuals which promote teamwork and quickly restore team effectiveness. Maintain organized personnel records for staff, monitor personnel attendance and performance and interact with associates and HR to resolve personnel issues. Technical: Involve in the process of protocol development by choosing an appropriate study design including statistical methodologies, calculating necessary sample size to achieve a pre-specified power, writing the statistical section of the protocol. Sample size calculations may require some literature search to ensure that the study assumptions are correct. Review protocol for the appropriateness of study design, sample size and suggested statistical methodologies. Generate/Review randomization code. Solve statistical technical problems/issue with effective, cost-efficient resolutions. Maintain a good working knowledge of clinical drug development and biostatistics in order to effectively serve as a department resource, mentor biostatisticians on job skills and statistical programming oversee ordevelop training plans or materials for Biostatistics associates, conduct training sessions, or otherwise train new hires and enhance the skills of existing personnel.
