Computer Majors Shortage a Warning

Offshoring and the dot-com bust are the underlying causes of a shortage of
computer science majors in universities nationwide. If the trend continues,
brain drain could damage the nation's knowledge economy when baby boomers
retire in about five years, observers said.

Academics suggest several other factors may play a role in the decline in
computer science and computer engineering bachelor's degree programs
nationwide. The outsourcing of jobs to India and the technology bust seem to
be the most obvious reasons since the decline began in 2001.

Enrollment actually started to decline in the late 1980s but ballooned in
the 1990s, when investors freely backed dot-com. companies, according to the
Computing Research Association in Washington, D.C. In 2000, enrollment in
schools offering doctoral programs peaked at 23,416, according to the
Computing Research Association.

Since then, numbers have declined steadily - a situation that has university
deans worried. The drop might lead to a dearth of people qualified to
develop new computer processes that could advance scientific discovery.

"I think, in general, the field is in a lot of trouble," said Jim Thomas,
dean of the School of Information Sciences and Technology at Penn State
University.
