MIDDLETOWN CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION EXAMINATION ANNOUNCEMENT

For the position of   LABORER I

The City of Middletown announces an open competitive examination to establish 
an eligible list for the position of Laborer I.



ELIGIBILITY:
High School Diploma or GED with experience in performing manual labor or 
maintenance work, or any equivalent combination of experience and training that 
provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. (See attached position 
description).

Possession of a valid Ohio Driver's License and the ability to possess a 
Commercial Driver's License with required endorsements within 6 months of hire 
date. (New employees in the classification of Laborer must possess a CDL by the 
end of their six­month probationary period).



EXAMINATION:
A written examination will be held Tuesday, May 8, 2007 at 6:00 p.m. Candidates 
are to report at 5:45 p.m. to the Middletown Area Senior Citizens Building, 140 
North Verity Parkway, Middletown, Ohio. Parking iSfivailable in the south lot 
of the City Building.

SCOPE OF EXAMINATION:
The examination will test the abilities and aptitudes of the applicants to 
perform the duties of Laborer I.



MINIMUM SCORE:
The minimum passing score on the examination is 70%.



APPLICATIONS:
Applications will be accepted until 5:00 p.m. Friday, May 4,2007, and may be 
obtained from the Citizens Service Center located in the lobby of the City 
Building, One Donham Plaza, Middletown, Ohio. Applications should be returned 
to the reception area of the City Manager's Office, second floor of the City 
Building. No application will be accepted after this deadline. An application 
form must be filed to be eligible to take the examination. .



STARTING SALARY:
$28,246 annually with excellent benefits.

A copy of your DD214 must be submitted with the application to receive veteran 
credit.

POSITION SUMMARY:
This is semi-skilled manual work, performing a variety of manual tasks. Work 
involves responsibility for the safe and efficient completion of assigned tasks 
performed under the immediate supervision an employee in a higher 
classification.

Requires necessary physical condition to perform heavy physical labor over a 
sustained period of time primarily outdoors: standing, walking, bending, and 
carrying heavyweight items (50-100 pounds) such as tools, equipment, and 
supplies.



POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Experience in performing labor, maintenance or construction work; or any 
equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the following 
knowledge, skills, and ability:

a. Ability to develop skill in the operation of assigned equipment.

b. Knowledge of various hand tools.

c. Knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions 
necessary in such work activities.

d. Some knowledge of the operation of trucks, light tractors and similar 
equipment, including traffic laws and regulations.

e. Ability to perform manual labor and to work in inclement weather.



2. Possession of a valid Ohio Driver's License and the ability to acquire a 
Commercial Driver's License (CDL), with endorsements including air brakes and 
combination vehicles required, and tanker endorsements preferred. (New 
employees in the classification of Laborer must possess a CDL by the end of 
their six-month probationary period. Failure to obtain a CDL by the end of the 
probationary period will be grounds for dismissal. A six-month extension of the 
probationary period may be granted if the employee shows a good faith effort to 
obtain a CDL.



DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (For Performance Appraisal):

1. Sweep and load dirt and debris from street into truck.

2. Assist with snow and ice control.

3. Perform pick and shovel work in grading, patching, and otherwise maintaining 
streets.

4. Assist in laying pipe.

5. Assist with water main breaks and routine cleaning of sewer mains.

6. Perform proper confined space entry.

7. Spread gravel, stone and other construction materials.

8. Operate trucks, power lawn mowers, and small tractors and such machinery as 
air compressors, water pumps, and similar equipment.

9. Perform a variety of gardening and parks maintenance work.

10. Establishes and maintain working relationships with other employees and the 
public.

11. Maintain regular and timely attendance.

12. Perform related work as required.
