Unemployed Workers Action Alert - February 25th, 2004
Today, Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) took to the floor of the U.S.
Senate to speak on the issue of extended unemployment benefits.

The real action is likely to occur TOMORROW MORNING (Thursday February
26th), when Senator Cantwell will offer an amendment to the gun
liability bill, calling for a 6-month extension of unemployment
benefits. The amendment, which is likely to come in the morning around
10:30am, and will be based on S. 2006 and would reactivate the TEUC
program that was cut off in December 2003. (Once again you can watch the
proceedings on CSPAN - 2).

The amendment should be subject to a vote. To win, the measure would
require 60 votes. If the vote proceeds as expected, it would be the
first time that the Senate allowed an actual vote on the issue (as
opposed to "unanimous consent" motions).

Our goal is to reach the 60 vote threshold, but if not, we hope to get
enough Republicans votes to create a Senate majority in favor of the
extension. Such a vote would put significant pressure on the Senate
leadership to negotiate especially after the favorable House vote on
February 5th.

Please take a minute first thing in the morning to call your Senators
and urge them to vote in favor of Senator Cantwell's TEUC amendment to
the gun liability bill.

It is especially important that we generate grassroots pressure
on the following GOP Senators:

Ohio
Mike DeWine, (202) 224-2315
George Voinovich, (202) 224-3353

Illinois
Peter Fitzgerald, (202) 224-2854

Missouri
Christopher Bond, (202) 224-5721

Colorado
Ben Campbell, (202) 224-5852

Iowa
Charles Grassley, (202) 224-3744

North Carolina
Elizabeth Dole, (202) 224-6342

Maine
Olympia Snowe, (202) 224-5344
Susan Collins, (202) 224-2523
