 This employee performs journey level work by troubleshooting and
repairing automobiles, trucks, construction equipment, specialized
equipment such as fire pumpers, and non-automotive equipment such as air
tools.  Performs related duties as required.

submit your detailed resume in lieu of the Work Experience Form.
 
2.         BY U.S. MAIL - Download application forms from this site

return them by first class U.S. Mail to the City of Cincinnati Human
Resources Department, Two Centennial Plaza, 805 Central Avenue, Suite
200, Cincinnati, Ohio 45202.  Application and supporting documents must
be postmarked no later than the closing date.  You may submit your
detailed resume in lieu of the Work Experience Form. 
 
 QUALIFICATIONS:  Each applicant must have a high school diploma or GED
and three years of paid experience in automotive repair work.  It is
desirable to possess a certification from the National Institute of
Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).  Must have a valid Ohio Class A
Commercial Driver's License or obtain one during the probationary
period. Must be willing to work shifts other than normal business hours
including nights, weekends, and holidays. May be required to lift heavy
amounts of weight in excess of 50 pounds. Must have or obtain a service
set of tools necessary to perform the job.  All required experience must
have occurred within the last (5) five years. You are required to show
your valid driver's license to the Human Resources Department staff NO
LATER THAN THE DEADLINE DATE FOR FILING APPLICATIONS.  Must be a
Hamilton County resident at the time of appointment.
 
CREDIT FOR MILITARY SERVICE:  Per Ohio Civil Service law, Veteran's
credit is available only to residents of the state of Ohio who pass the
written exam. To be eligible for the credit, you must have served on 
active duty for more than 180 days AND (1) have received an honorable
discharge (2) OR  have transferred to the reserve with satisfactory
service  (3)  OR  have been a Red Cross Nurse.  Qualified non-disabled
veterans 
may receive 5 additional points and qualified disabled veterans may
received 10 additional points. If a discharge was characterized as
anything other than honorable, points will not be awarded. A copy of
your DD-214 must 
be submitted to the office of Human Resources to receive the 5
additional points and a copy of your DD-214 plus a letter from the
Veterans Administration (dated within six months of the closing date of
this exam) must be submitted to the office of Human Resources to receive
the 10 additional points.  All documentation must be received by the
Application deadline of March 20, 2009.  
 
EXAMPLES OF KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES WHICH MAY BE
SAMPLED/MEASURED/INCLUDED IN THIS EXAM:
 
Knowledge of:
The design and function of two and four cycle internal combustion
engines and diesel engines.
All of the various systems associated with automotive-equipment,
including fuel carburetion, fuel pumps, fuel injection, brakes,
steering, transmissions, suspension, electrical, cooling, lubrication,
air conditioning systems, ABS brake systems, and hydraulics.
Types and characteristics of various fluids that are put into automotive
components.
Mechanics hand tools and standard trade practices and procedures.
Occupational hazards and safe work practices when working with and
around automotive equipment and automotive repair equipment.
Testing instruments, such as voltmeter, multimeters, etc.
Operating and repair characteristics of a variety of automotive
equipment such as cars and trucks.
Battery charging procedures.
Basic installation procedures for electrical components on equipment.

to)


Skill to:
Operate basic PC computer programs.
Diagnose problems using knowledge of equipment, past experience, and
test equipment.
Overhaul gasoline engines.
Perform work on components of equipment including cleaning diesel fuel
systems, repairing and adjusting carburetors, repairing hydraulic
systems of all kinds such as brakes, engines, oil and water, installing
electrical equipment.
Use mechanics hand tools and test equipment associated with automotive
repair, maintenance, overhaul, and replacement including pullers, filler
gauges, pressure gauges, volt and ohm meters, micrometers, timing
lights, etc.
Drive a motor vehicle in order to transport oneself on the streets and
highways.


 
Ability to:
Detect unsafe work behavior.
Decide if a component needs to be cleaned, replaced, or repaired using
guides in service manuals and the types of and extent of adjustment,
alignment, repair, or replacement.
Improvise by using materials on hand in order to reactivate equipment in
emergency situations.
Plan and organize work so that all parts needed to complete a project
are ordered ahead of time when possible.
Comply with practices, policies, and procedures of the department such
as keeping work area clean and accessible and regulations dealing with
safe and proper use of equipment and tools. 
Understand and apply mechanical principles. 
Write clearly and concisely to complete reports and forms. 
 
SUBJECTS AND WEIGHTS OF TEST SECTIONS: The exam will consist of a
written examination.  The written portion will count for 100% of the
exam grade.  The passing score will be determined after the examination
by the Civil Service Examiner together with the Secretary.
Determination of the passing score will be based on the job analysis,
analysis of examination results, consultation with subject matter
experts or other professional methods.  Veteran Points will be added to
passing scores.
