[jsfg_cinti] Re: Attention please! - Procedure for responding to Job Postings

Dear Lance,
As one of your Alumni, I still keep in touch through the listserv. The
scenario presented in your e-mail is precisely the strategy that was being
touted during my (all too long) tenure with your group. Now, you're
presenting a "follow the rules (rule gnome) strategy". I am now confused.
I thank the organization for the help. You people are one of the reasons
that I finally landed another position furthering my career.

Pardon the interuption, but it seems to me that the applicant pushed the
edge as advocated by the workshops, only to get his/her wrists slapped by
Sister Mary-Elephant. Not knowing all of the particulars, I know I was at a
point where I would have pushed every available button to get heard. It
seems that your response is in conflict with the lessons I learned so well
at the JSFG forum.
Regards,
Rick White

Subject: [jsfg_cinti] Attention please! - Procedure for responding to
Job Postings
Importance: High

Dear JSFG E-mail Mailing List Subscribers:
We hope that you find the JSFG E-mail Mailing List to be a valuable
resource. We believe that the information posted here is useful to
individuals involved in a job search, especially the Job Postings.

Let me remind you of an important aspect of the Job Posting which is,
specifically, the "How Should Candidate Apply?" part of the Job Posting. It
is very important that you follow the employers directions on how to apply
for the job.

To do otherwise eliminates you from consideration for the job (after all, no
employer will hire someone who cannot follow simple instructions) and
sullies the reputation of the JSFG and its members.

So, for example, if the employer indicates in the Job Posting that
applicants should apply by mail (and only by mail) then you must apply only
by mail. Do not telephone or e-mail or FAX or personally visit the employer
even if that kind of contact information is included in the Job Posting.

We recently had a situation where a JSFG member ignored the instructions
contained in the Job Posting and called the potential employer on the
telephone even though the Job posting clearly directed applicants to respond
only by mail.

Naturally, that JSFG member will not be hired for the job. And the employer
was very upset with the JSFG over this faux pas committed by one of our
members. This may cause them to stop posting job opportunities on the JSFG
E-mail Mailing List. If so, that will hurt all JSFG members.

In summary, please apply for the jobs posted to the JSFG E-mail Mailing List
only by the method identified in the "How Should Candidate Apply?" portion
of the Job Posting.

Have a great day!

Regards,
Lance Feldman
JSFG Computer Committee Chairman
