Tax help available for Ohio's laid-off workers
------------------------------------------------------------
The state of Ohio has reached a deal with two insurance companies to
offer tax-advantaged health care plans to Ohioans laid off because of
foreign competition.
The Health Coverage Tax Credit program of the federal Trade Adjustment
Assistance Reform Act of 2002 allows those workers to get tax breaks on
their health care insurance premiums, provided they sign with a
state-approved plan.
The Ohio Insurance Department has signed two insurers, Anthem Blue Cross
and Blue Shield and Kaiser Permanente, to implement the program in Ohio.
The program is also open to retirees who lost benefits due to hardships
at their former companies, the department said in a press release.
About 11,800 workers are eligible for the plan, the department
estimated.
