My brother is a Human Resource Officer for the National Park Service and
teaches classes on applying for federal jobs. Below is his abbreviated
response to my questions about applying for federal jobs. Also, if you
reply to this e-mail I will forward the attachments he included with his
response. (They get stripped through JSFG.)
The key thing to do in getting a job with the federal government is to
get a good resume together and answer the KSA (knowledge, skills and
abilities) statements described in a job announcement. The minimum
qualifications will give you a score of 70 out of 100. The other 30
points comes from answering the ksa statements. Regarding contacting the
hiring official, the federal government has a basic 'don't call us,
we'll call you' policy. The reason why is because of something called
'The Rule of 3'. This rule states that only the top 3 candidates based
upon score can be considered for a position.
USAJOBS is the one source to look at for all federal civilian jobs. I'd
recommend setting up an email account with them to send you any job
openings related to your area of expertise.
