Dear JSFG Folks,
Recently Stephen D. Maatman posted a warning to this
e-mail list about possible fraud resulting from
calling 809 area code numbers. He appended an email
he claimed to have received on the subject.
In the interest of obtaining reliable information on
the matter, I suggest that anyone concerned about
possible telephone fraud originating from area code
809 refer to the following article at the Urban
Legends Reference Page website (also known as the
"Snopes" website).
809 Area Code Scam
http://www.snopes.com/crime/fraud/809.asp
According to Snopes, it is true that some people have
been defrauded by telephone calls to area code 809.
They conclude that 809 telephone fraud is, "Real
fraud, but its usage is rare and most victims are
taken for only a small amount of money."
In addition they offer advice on how to deal with the
general problem of telephone fraud that may be useful.
Also, here are two other articles from reliable
sources on 809 fraud:

U.S. Department of Energy CIAC office)

Have a great day!

Lance Feldman
