Hi Margarena,
At our public agency, we access mainframe and midrange computers a lot. We
have so far, avoided relying on using JAWS scripts beyond what is included
by FS with the product. (We haven't needed to so far.) I test each version
of JAWS we anticipate deploying (we're still on 4.51) with the Microsoft
stuff we use -- and with our terminal emulation software. We've typically
used terminal emulation software from Attachmate, but found that some
versions did not play nice with JAWS. I understand scripts are available to
address such problems. We dodged the problem at first by juggling which
versions of Attachmate software we deployed to our JAWS workstations. We
are now running WindowsXP Pro and I could not resolve JAWS - Attachmate
problems, despite hours of technical assistance from FS and Attachmate. We
again avoided reliance on additional scripting by deploying a different
terminal emulation product. On our JAWS workstations, we now run
"Reflection for IBM, version 10" from a company called WRQ.
Here's an interesting thing though: find out what communication "protocol"
your terminal emulation needs to connect to your mainframe. We must use one
called "TN3270". In Attachmate's product for WindowsXP, this protocol does
not work well enough with JAWS (or ZoomText either) but their "VT100"
protocol apparently works just fine! The WRQ product works just fine all the
way around, and they also offer a product specifically to connect to
mid-range computers which we use fine with JAWS.
I hope that helps.
James

Subject: working with main frame
Hello!
I hope that all of you are having a wonderfully tranquil holiday season.
I recently got a job as a customer service representative for a company
which deals with governmental insurance and benefits. I have to access the
main frame a lot, and JFW is not reading very well at all. It rarely reads
the field that the cursor is on when I press insert up arrow, and when I
type it echoes all of these strange numbers even when I type letters, and I
have the characters turned off. I haven't used very many programs on the
main frame yet, but I am sure they are only going to be more complicated,
and that they won't speak well at all.
I'm wondering if anybody has had experience using a main frame before.
I'm looking for any suggestions and/or assistance. I want to get this
problem solved quickly, because I don't want my employer to decide I'm not
worth the energy. I'm not sure that the city in which I live has truly
knowledgeable and experienced people who can accurately assist me.
Thanks in advance, and have a good day!
