I have the box unchecked so that it won't remember my password but it seems to 
do that anyway. Smile.

That'll sign you out, but only for the current session. If you reboot the 
computer, you'll get signed back in.
I think what may be happening is that you may be perceiving the popup 
messages that the windows messenger service sends to you as being instant 
messages, but that's only a guess.
Basically, the goal here is to set windows messenger and msn messenger 
to  not start when windows starts, and signing out won't help for all 
windows sessions, just the current one.
