Beto,
This isn't a problem. Jaws is just saying the proper name of the character
it's creating when you type a double dash. In typographer's and printer's
language, this is the em dash, as in the letter m, and is used to set off
things differently-- usually an interjectory phrase like the one I'm typing
here-- than what the en dash (as in letter n) does.

Here in Outlook Express, Jaws is saying only "dash dash," because I'm typing
in plain text and so two dashes aren't being turned into the single long
line that is an em dash.

I believeyou can turn off this Word capability in the word options menusif
you don't want Word to create this type of dash. But for those who want
their hard copy to look similar to traditional printing, this is a
desireable feature, as are the smart quotes replacing the plain
typewriter-like straight quotes.

Hope this helps.
o use it

Subject: when I type the ---

Hello JFW List Serve and Freedom Scientific once again:
I have had this problem since JAWS 2.0 and I am at JAWS 6.0 now, but I just
never bothered to do anything about it. It regards typing the -- in MS
Word. When you do it in MS Word, a minimum of three dashes, it states, "m-"
It basically states the letter m before the dash? It has always done this,
and it has always bothered me, but I've just never took the time to inform
anybody of this. Does anyone else had this problem? Has anyone else
noticed it before?

Beto Escobar III, LMSW
